We're Not Finished, 2023
Mixed media on canvas
24 x 30"
$1,500
This is probably the darkest portrait I’ve done. The man’s hand wrapping around the neck of the woman who appears to be naked and vulnerable, paired with the title I gave this piece, implies the additional horror she’s about to go through. Given the chaotic and overwhelmingly dark true stories behind this painting of what’s been happening in Iran (from the eye injuries purposefully inflicted by members of the regime to the sexual violence and torture the protesters are faced with), I let myself make things less neat than in previous portraits. I also got lost in the lyrics of the song “Violet” by Hole and replayed it a bunch of times while working on the painting.
